Legend & Heritage

History & Legend

That Thumphavang is located in Na-Vang Village, Nongbok District, Khammouane Province, approximately 40 to 45 kilometers from Thakhek town. While historical records do not specify the exact year of its construction, it is widely believed to be an ancient stupa dating back to the early settlement of the Nongbok community, potentially hundreds of years old. The site has undergone numerous restorations by local residents and monks to preserve its legacy for future generations.

  • Architecture: That Thumphavang features a unique design that reflects traditional architectural styles, blending local Lao artistry with historical craftsmanship.
  • A Center of Faith: Every year, an annual festival is held at the stupa, attracting Buddhists from both within and outside the district. It is a time for making merit, offering alms, and performing the sacred bathing ritual of the stupa to seek blessings.
  • Cultural Heritage Site: Beyond its role as a place of worship, That Thumphavang serves as an important site for learning about the traditions and rich culture of the people of Nongbok, which have been impressively preserved to this day.
