Unveil the Hidden Sanctuary of Faith
Tham Pa Fa Cave (or Buddha Cave) in Khammouane Province is one of the most significant cultural and religious landmarks in Laos. Located in Ban Na Khang Xang, Thakhek District, it is approximately 14–15 kilometers from the Thakhek town center.
The cave gained worldwide fame in 2004 when a local villager named Mr. Bounnong climbed a limestone cliff in search of bamboo shoots and discovered a hidden entrance. Inside the cave, he found 229 ancient Buddha statues made of wood, gold, silver, and bronze, believed to be centuries old (dating back to the Lan Xang Kingdom era). In addition to the statues, ancient palm-leaf manuscripts containing religious teachings were also discovered. The name "Nong Pa Fa" originates from the lake in front of the cave, which is home to a large population of soft-shell turtles.
