That Sikhottabong: An Icon of Faith and Timeless Heritage
That Sikhottabong is an ancient and historically significant monument in Khammouane Province, located approximately 6 kilometers from the Thakhek town center. It was built during the Sikhottabong Kingdom (around the 9th–10th century). According to legend, the stupa was constructed to enshrine the relics of an Arahant or the Buddha himself. Throughout history, it has been renovated multiple times by various monarchs.
The stupa features a unique square shape distinctive to the Sikhottabong style, setting it apart from other stupas in Laos. Its structure is robust and beautiful, representing the artistic and cultural prosperity of the ancient kingdom. Situated on the banks of the Mekong River, it offers breathtaking scenery and stands as the most sacred site for the people of Khammouane.
