Thalang is located in Nakai District, Khammuane Province. Originally, it was a community area with abundant forests. The distance from Thakhek to Thalang (Nakai) is approximately 106 kilometers, taking about 3 hours to drive via Route 12 and Route 1E—a scenic route passing through beautiful mountains and forests. Later, during the construction of the Nam Theun 2 Hydroelectric Power Project, the area was flooded to create a large reservoir (known as the Nakai Reservoir). This geographical change caused large tree stumps from the original forest to remain submerged while their tops protruded above the water, becoming a unique landmark and creating a new way of life for local people through fishing and nature tourism.
Thalang Nakai is considered a "green lung and a watery touch" filled with unmatched charm. It attracts travelers with vast waterscapes contrasting with limestone mountain ranges and the stunning, weathered dead tree stumps standing tall. This place is ideal for scenic boat cruises, relaxing in homestays, experiencing local ethnic minority cultures, and breathing in fresh, pure air to the fullest.
