History & Legend

Hin Nam No National Park: A Natural World Heritage WonderLocated in Bualapha District, Khammouane Province covers a total area of 94,121 hectares in the southeastern part of Laos. Situated approximately 150 to 170 kilometers from Thakhek town, this breathtaking conservation area is a vital habitat for a rich diversity of wildlife, including several rare and critically endangered species with unique and mysterious characteristics globally. It is also a prolific origin of diverse natural ecosystems, featuring lush primary rainforests, stunning waterfalls, and complex cave systems—most notably the Xe Bang Fai River Cave (Tham Nam Lod Xe Bang Fai).

Bordering Vietnam to the east, it shares an international boundary with Phong Nha-Keng Bang National Park, a natural world heritage site in Vietnam. The name "Hin Nam No" translates to "karst limestone mountains with sharp, needle-like peaks resembling bamboo shoots," describing the distinct topography of steep limestone forests forged by geological evolution over 300 million years.

On July 13, 2025, at the 47th session of the World Heritage Committee in Paris, France, Hin Nam No National Park in Bualapha District, Khammouane Province, Lao PDR, was officially inscribed as a transboundary natural World Heritage site, jointly designated with the Phong Nha-Kẻ Bàng National Park World Heritage site in Vietnam.
