French Colonial Era Construction: Thakhek, located along the Mekong River, was chosen by the French Empire as a major administrative and commercial center for Khammouane Province in the early 20th century (around 1910–1930). The French re-planned the town in an orderly grid system, establishing government offices, banks, schools, and residences for French officials, alongside shops owned by foreign merchants (particularly Chinese and Vietnamese merchants at the time).
A Living Heritage: Although over a century has passed and the town has weathered various historical events (including the events of March 21, 1946), many of these old buildings still stand proudly along the main roads in central Thakhek.
Cultural Tourism Attraction: Today, these old houses and colonial buildings have become a symbol of Thakhek's tourism, attracting both domestic and international visitors to stroll, take photos, and enjoy the rare, warm, and romantic atmosphere.
