Legend & Heritage

History & Legend

Fa Meu Cave is located in Khoun Ngeun Village, Khoun Kham District, Khammouane Province, approximately 100–110 kilometers away from Thakhek town, taking just over 2 hours to travel. The cave is situated in the majestic limestone mountain area of Khammouane Province, which is renowned for the abundance of its forests and its pristine natural ecosystem.

"Fa Meu Cave" is considered an important archaeological heritage site because traces of handprint impressions or ancient cave art have been discovered inside, reflecting the lifestyle and settlement of humans in prehistoric times. These handprints are believed to be symbols of belief, expressions of identity, or recordings of stories by ancient people who once lived in or used the cave as a shelter and performed various rituals.

The paintings or printed handprints on the cave walls are considered highly valuable primitive folk art for historical and archaeological research. Symbolic signs and human-like figures combine to form 2 major groups, followed by animal figures and a total of 285 patterned handprint figures. These are symbols on the cliff face that are a marvel worthy of conservation and protection, serving as a tourist attraction and a geological research and study site for everyone to learn from forever.
