The most popular classic itinerary for the Thakhek Loop.

Start your adventure from Thakhek heading towards Route 12, famously known as "Cave Alley". You will be greeted by majestic limestone karsts lining both sides of the road. Explore Elephant Cave, swim at Pha Inh Cave, and marvel at the colorful lights inside Nong Aen Cave. In the afternoon, ascend to the Nakai Plateau, passing the Nam Theun 2 Dam, and end your day watching the sunset at Thalang Village amidst the unique submerged dead trees (highly recommend staying at the famous Sabaidee Guesthouse).

Ride out of Thalang through lush, dense forests and beautifully winding roads. Take a refreshing dip at the crystal-clear blue Cool Springs to beat the heat. Afterward, continue your journey to explore Dragon Cave, conveniently located near the main road with stunning stalactites. Keep riding through the breathtaking mountain scenery before arriving at Khoun Kham town, your basecamp before tackling Kong Lor Cave the next day.

The ultimate highlight of the trip! Head into Kong Lor Cave early in the morning where you will take a longtail boat through a spectacular 7.5-kilometer river cave that cuts entirely through a massive karst mountain to Natane Village. The cave is pitch black and thrilling, with illuminated sections where you can walk and admire the stalagmites. After exploring, ride back and relax in Khoun Kham, or start heading back down the loop to save time for tomorrow.

The final day of your journey! Ride out from Khoun Kham and head back to Thakhek via Route 8 and Route 13 South. Don't forget to stop for photos at the Phou Pha Marn Viewpoint, which offers sweeping views of the limestone karst landscape. The ride back is mostly straight and easier. Arrive safely back in Thakhek to return your motorbike, wrapping up an epic and unforgettable adventure.
