Historical Background

Historical Background

Phra That Sikhottabong was built around the 6th century during the Sikhottabong Empire under the reign of King Sumintharath to enshrine the holy relics (forehead bone) of Lord Buddha. In the 16th century (1539 AD), King Phothisarat initiated a major restoration, which was later completed by King Setthathirath in 1568 AD, giving the stupa its beautiful Lane Xang architectural style. Later, in the early 19th century, King Anouvong commissioned further renovations and built a grand hall to house the massive seated Buddha statue.
